Driving forces – children’s ministry

There are several big things that have caused us to recognize that we need more space. One of these driving forces is children’s ministry. There are at least two aspects to children’s ministry needs that play a role.

First, the demographics of our congregation have changed in the past 10 years. We looked at two data points of historical attendance here on this campus, and have extrapolated two future data points based on this historical data.

In the table below, 2005 and 2014 show historical information. The percentage shows the relationship of the highest attendance number of children to the average number of adults.

It appears that our demographics have changed in the past 10 years. Since 2005 our congregation has become more weighted toward families with children up through 5th grade. Assuming that we will stay at the current ratio of children in nursery and Sunday school to adults in the auditorium as we grow to 1200 and eventually to 1600 in attendance, our need for children’s space will grow to 140% of what we now use.

The second factor in children’s ministry space is the kind and location of children’s space in church buildings, which we’ll cover in a future post.
