CHBC Kids Ministry exists so that kids may know, love, and follow Jesus, and reach their world for Christ. We partner with parents, supporting their teaching with intentional discipleship, engaging teaching, joyful worship, and a space where their child can be seen and known by their church community.
On Sunday mornings, we offer Kids Ministry classrooms for children from infants to 5th grade. All of our Kids Ministry staff and volunteers work together to create fun, safe environments that meet the charge of Psalm 78:4, “Tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.”
For kids older than 4 years, we utilize a large group/small group format. In the large group setting, kids will be led in worship songs suited for them and hear a dynamic Bible lesson. Students will then split into small groups based on their age and to reinforce the message and build lasting relationships. Our lessons are Gospel-centered, showing how the whole Bible points to Jesus. Elementary students cover the entire bible over a two to three year period, while Preschool children have a higher level overview each year, exploring in more depth as their understanding grows.
Kids Ministry is OPEN for the 9 and 11 am services for Nursery through 5th grade in a limited capacity. Registration is MANDATORY so we can appropriately prepare our volunteers for this Sunday.
NOTE: Select the age or grade of the child that follows the NC school system birthday cutoff.

A week full of joy, excitement, laughter, most of all, strong biblical teaching for 1st-6th graders. Every part of camp including the meals, skits and games, is designed and executed to present truths of the Bible.
A week for 4-5 year olds full of summer fun, learning about the story of God, and fellowship with our little ones! Faith Explorers will include a large group teaching and worship time, games, crafts, and small group time designed especially for this age group.
To provide loving care for your infant and 1-year-old. Monitors outside of all the rooms allow you to discreetly watch your child.
To engage younger preschoolers with the truths of the gospel at an early age. We start our gospel-centered, three-year curriculum, Gospel Project, at age 2. If a child stays in Kids Ministry through 5th grade, he/she will go through the entire Bible three times.
To engage older preschoolers with the truths of the gospel at an early age. We start our exciting large group/small group format at age 4. Children will love the age-appropriate lessons, music and other elements of the morning – all designed to help young children worship God.
We split 1st-3rd graders and 4th-5th graders into two separate assemblies in our large group/small group format. All elementary school kids will enjoy the high-energy, biblically based lessons they’ll experience in large-group time while developing meaningful relationships during small-group time.
Our Adaptive classroom provides specialized support for any children who may have a difficult time following large group instruction or engaging appropriately with a large group of individuals. We are open to children of all abilities. We will use a higher level of multi-modal teaching (visual, verbal, tactile) and provide more flexibility with the need for movement and breaks throughout the morning.
When you arrive at CHBC on Sunday morning, please look for one of our Welcome Team members and ask them to direct you to our Kids Ministry Check-In station. One of our Check-In coordinators will help you check your child into our system. You and your child will receive personalized, coordinating ID tags. In order to check your child into a classroom, you must show both tags to the room coordinator.
If you you are new to CHBC, please stop by our Kids Ministry guest registration desk in Family Check-In area. Once there, a Check-In Coordinator will be happy to register your child and direct you to the right classroom.
If we need to contact you about your child during the service, we will show your child’s ID code on the screens during the adult worship service. If you see your child’s ID code on the screen, please proceed immediately to the Family Check-In area and find a staff member to take you to your child’s classroom.
In order to check your child out after the service, a classroom leader must ensure that you and your child’s ID tags match. If one of the tags is lost a staff member must check your identification before your child is released.
Finally, be sure to check out our Kids Ministry Need to Know to learn more about our safety policies, volunteer screening and emergency action plans.
At CHBC, we have strict safety precautions in place to provide the best possible safety of your child(ren). These protocols include:
- Every volunteer working with children must clear a background check (which includes a biannual check against the national sex offender registry).
- There is mandatory annual training for every volunteer in Kids Ministry.
- Two-Adult Rule: There must always be two approved adults with any child or group of children.
-- This rule applies in every location, even during bathroom breaks. An adult does not go into the bathroom with the child (3 year old-5th grade) but stands at the door with the 2nd volunteer also present.
-- For younger children (6 months to 3 years) the bathroom door remains open with clear visibility for another adult when an adult needs to assist a child or change a diaper.
-- Men are not allowed to change diapers.
-- Youth Assistants cannot go into the bathroom with children.
- Children are not allowed to go down the hall to the bathroom by themselves. There are 2 adults always present even if it means the entire class/group must go. Kids Ministry consistently recruits two hall monitors every Sunday in addition to a supervisor so that halls remain safe and 2 adult rule is always in effect.
- Child Pickup: Parents are given a security tag that must be presented to pick up a child. A volunteer must compare their code to child’s name tag code. If a security tag is lost, the parent must show proper identification to Kids Director.
- All exterior doors into the Kids Ministry wing remain locked from outside on Sundays.
- Volunteers are instructed to report any suspected abuse and/or neglect to the Kids Ministry Director and contact the North Carolina Department of Social Services.
- Kids Ministry’s stated policy on Correction and Discipline: Any correction should reflect biblical values and should be seasoned with love and grace. No timeouts, withholding snacks, spanking, etc. If a child is non-compliant after several attempts, the parents will be paged.
Each child needs caring voices who are ready to “Tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” (Psalm 78:4)
Kids Ministry has a variety of opportunities for serving the children and families of CHBC.
Our most critical roles are large group teachers and small group leaders. Also, vitally important to the ongoing work of the ministry:
- Small Group Assistants
- Supervisors
- Greeters
- Check-in and hall monitors
- Midweek resource & supply help
Responsible for overseeing the execution and implementation of Kids Ministry on Sunday mornings including supporting volunteers, contacting volunteers who are not present when scheduled to serve, helping to address challenges in classrooms, gathering extra supplies upon request, and contacting parents when needed. They are also responsible for dismissing after lockdown/severe weather/fire events.
Responsible for supporting and problem solving check-in services for volunteers and families, as well as monitoring child-to-volunteer ratios for each classroom to ensure adherence to our predetermined ratios for each age group.
Responsible for upholding the Two-Adult Rule for bathroom breaks, offering support to volunteers, manning security at entrances, and notifying volunteers when service has ended. In case of lock down, hall monitors are responsible for closing entry doors and communicating with the classrooms on their floor.
Nursery volunteers care for children ranging from newborn babies to crawlers. There is a ratio of 2 babies to each volunteer. The goal in our Nursery is for babies to have the name of Jesus spoken over them, and to be loved, held, and comforted in a safe environment.
Toddler volunteers are responsible for caring for children who are just beginning to walk up to two years old. The ratio in this room is 3 children to each volunteer. The Toddler class has a supply bin in room 112 which contains activities and board books to share with the children each week. The goal in our Toddler class is for the children to know that God loves them.
Our Room Facilitators for the 2’s and 3’s are responsible for engaging the children in their age-appropriate circle time activities, keeping the class on schedule for outdoor activities as much as possible, and keeping the walkie talkie with them at all times until all children are released to their adult. If ratios are exceeded without prior discussion with the Supervisor or Kids Ministry staff, the Facilitator is responsible for contacting the Supervisor via walkie talkie. The facilitator is also responsible for checking out children at the end of service and taking notes to share with the supervisor or Kids Ministry staff when necessary. The ratio in the 2’s room is 5 children to each volunteer, and for the 3’s room is 6 children to each volunteer.
Our 2’s and 3’s Volunteers are responsible for engaging children in activities for the duration of the class, infusing each and every moment they can with intentional opportunities for children to know and experience Jesus. All of these resources will be supplied in the labeled bin located in room 112 to be retrieved before service begins. The ratio in the 2’s room is 5 children to each volunteer, and for the 3’s room is 6 children to each volunteer.
Our 4’s Small Group Facilitator is responsible for communicating with the other volunteers and children, preparing everyone for transitions to large group, keeping an eye on the time for outside activities, dividing the children into small groups (if not already provided), and keeping the walkie talkie with them at all times until all children are released to their adult. The facilitator is responsible for checking out children at the end of service and taking notes to share with the supervisor or Kids Ministry staff when necessary. The small group facilitator will also be responsible for leading a group of up to 6 children during small group time. The ratio in the 4’s room is 6 children to each volunteer.
Each Small Group Volunteer will be responsible for interacting with and engaging children for the duration of the class. When it is time for small group discussions, each small group volunteer will be responsible for leading a group of up to 6 children through the questions and discussion items listed in the small group guide each week, including asking personally relevant questions to the children. Small group volunteers are then responsible for leading children through the provided craft according to the instructions provided in the small group guide. All of these resources will be supplied in the bin located in room 112.
Our PreK Youth Volunteers serve in the Toddlers through 4 year old classes. Youth Volunteers do not count towards the Two-Adult Rule, but those between the ages of 14-17 do count towards ratios after two adults are present. Youth Volunteers may not change diapers, assist in bathroom breaks, or check out children. Their role is crucial in engaging with the children, helping to be a buddy to a child who needs extra help, and assisting during activities. In the 4 year old class, the youth volunteer may also be responsible for helping with the tech slideshow.
Our Large Group Teachers are responsible for leading worship time, presenting the weekly Bible lesson in age-appropriate and engaging ways within the time constraints of the morning’s schedule. Each large group teacher will be provided with a large group teacher guide for the appropriate age group, as well as media, music, and suggested activities. The purpose of the Large Group is to model corporate worship, presenting the information from the Bible story, which plants seeds to be utilized later in small group discussion while providing space to practice worshiping God together within a community.
K-5th Small Group Facilitators are responsible for keeping the class moving along according to the schedule for outside time, prayer, and small group time. They are in charge of the attendance clipboard and walkie talkie for their class. The small group facilitator will lead one of the two small groups and takes the lead in checking out children at the end of service and taking notes to share with the supervisor or Kids Ministry staff when necessary.
K-5th Small Group Volunteers are responsible for ensuring all children in their class are present and accounted for throughout the morning’s schedule and transitions. Ratios in K-5th grade classes are 6 children to each volunteer. During large group time, these volunteers sit amongst the children, and help support the teaching by redirecting and encouraging participation especially during worship. During small group time, each small group volunteer will lead a group of up to 6 children in a discussion of the morning’s Large Group teaching according to the questions and prompts given in the small group guide. Small group volunteers are then responsible for leading children through the provided craft/activity according to the instructions provided in the small group guide. All of these resources are supplied in the age appropriate bin located in room 112.
Our K-5th Youth Volunteers serve in the elementary classes downstairs. Youth Volunteers do not count towards the Two-Adult Rule, but those between the ages of 14-17 do count towards ratios after two adults are present. Youth Volunteers may not assist in bathroom breaks, or check out children. Their role is crucial in engaging with the children, helping to be a buddy to a child who needs extra help, and assisting during activities. Youth volunteers may also be asked to aid the teaching in large groups by helping with the tech slideshow.
Adaptive Classroom Volunteers help facilitate a buddy system with our children who need extra help on any given Sunday morning. These volunteers will receive an adaptive curriculum from our Special Needs Director, but are also encouraged to read through the leader guides for their buddy’s age group as well. Per direction from the Special Needs Director, these volunteers also may utilize the Adaptive Classroom with their buddy, always adhering to the Two-Adult Rule stated in our general policies.
Supply team volunteers meet during the week to change out materials in class-specific supply bins, maintain order in the supply room, and prepare crafts for the coming Sunday.
